Symphonie Fantastique
As the period drew to a close, several of the musicians, among them Giulia Barbini and Mark Dupere, came to me and ex- pressed a desire to perpetuate our collective artistic adventure in a permanent orchestra that would illuminate the pathbreaking repertoire of Romanticism with the heady combination of the players’ exuberance, the intensely characteristic sonorities of period instruments, and stylistic and aesthetic knowledge of the musical and poetic parameters of the Romantic Zeitgeist. There is at present no such orchestra and it is highly likely that an ensemble of this kind would attract a great deal of attention throughout Europe and, indeed, the world, should it have the proper financial and logistical support necessary to prepare and present challenging and enthralling repertoire.
I am deeply honored by the confidence these wonderful musicians have placed in me as a potential artistic leader of such an orchestra and wish to help them in every way possible. My widespread concert activities and contacts may be of some assistance, but all of the idealism in the world will not guarantee success. The generosity of enlightened individuals such as you would be crucial to the initiation of this exciting orchestra. It is with a sense of humility and inspiration that I write in support of this marvelous idea, which I back without reservation.“
